This Dragon and crown seal by Artelier Gargoyle is incredible. I had a hard time picking which seal to post. Ultimately my zodiac won—-it’s my birthday soon afterall. The Bear seal and Devil seal are among my other favorites.

A description:

"This seal has an intricately carved Achievement of Arms, almost unbelievably complex, that seems to have it all: one crown, two coronets, two crests ‘in the air’, an eagle rising out of a coronet, and a lion couchant bearing a flag. The ornate and multi-quartered shield is supported by two magnificent and marvelously engraved winged dragons rampant. Behind the shield is a double-headed eagle, one head looking East, one looking West, with a coronet about their necks. Each eagle holds a ring in its beak. Beneath all is a ribbon-like scroll bearing the motto in Spanish: “Ipsi Pero Desdichado.” (By Myself but Incomplete). Says Ward Dunham (Atelier Gargoyle partner and seal collector): “This is the most complex heraldic engraving I have ever encountered, and is one of my favorite seals in our collection.”

This seal is a jewelry-quality casting in bronze from the original seal, and the wood handle is turned in beautiful and incredibly durable black walnut, lightly finished. The original seal is an antique from the eighteenth century, hand-engraved in carnelian. Twenty years ago, when we first started experimenting with reproducing our seals in bronze, the bronzeworks was vandalized, and this very special one-of-a-kind seal, a museum piece, was among the items stolen. So if you see it on the second-hand market, let us know, we’re offering a $5000 reward for the return (no questions asked) of our treasure. Fortunately, our rubber molds had already been made, and we now have these spectacular reproductions.”

Amazing, eh?  I’ll think about the stolen seal at every flea market I go to for evermore.

Oh boy, yeah…. I’m posting this ( I hope no one was having fun). This is of course The Diary of Anne Frank. I was talking to a friend last night about scrapbooking and somehow this one came up. I’ll let you fill in the blank on what my thoughts are on this subject. Here’s some key word clues: handwritten, long lasting, and dignifying.

My No-Birthday-Left-Behind iniative has a few cracks in the visage. My brother Daniel “Waniel”, whose birthday was in June, felt a little excluded after I sent some belated salutations to Joel and Bess. To make up for it, I sent him a birthday card this weekend. I think he’ll like the dying Mole (who I’ve decided to name Julienne).

The back reads, “I’m sorry sir, it took me forever to dig here with only the use of one hand.”

I hope the postal workers enjoy this one too.

Head-over-heels in love with these illustrated envelopes to Klaus Flugge. As a children’s book publisher he received hundreds of illustrated letters from artists such as David McKee, Satoshi Kitamura, Tony Ross and many others. I hope this still happens in the publishing business today. Visit the gallery here.

Wow, who cares about penmanship when pen spinning exists. Of course the Japanese have made this into an art. The song selection is also MOST excellent.

William E. Dennis

"While a young man in his twenties, Dennis tried several lines of work as a clerk, but found them too boring for his taste. He decorated the ledger books in his charge with fancy birds and scrolls, but it seems that this did little to impress his employers, for he was fired from no less than three jobs! His fortunes changed and his career path became guided when shortly thereafter he met A. R. Dunton one of the most skilled penmen of the 19th century. Under Dunton’s guidance, Dennis learned much practical use for his pen, as well as many advanced techniques of penmanship."

The monument of Platt Rogers Spencer, “the father of Spencerian cursive.”

"Spencer was born in East Fishkill, New York, on November 7, 1800. His father, Caleb, died in 1806, and the family moved to Jefferson, Ohio in 1810, which was, at that time, unsettled. Platt was passionately fond of writing and, because paper was difficult to obtain at the time, Spencer wrote on birch tree bark, sand, ice, snow, the fly-leaves of his mother’s Bible and, by permission of a cobbler, the leather in his shop."
