Sini Script Calligraphy! Respectful praise to John Stortz for bringing this to my attention.
Sini Script is Islamic calligraphy in China—-an aesthetic milkshake of cultures. There are several types of Islamic calligraphy, but Sini Script refers to the more formal style. The origin of this style starts at the Mongol control over China in the late 13th century.
The pictures above are the brushes and workspace of calligraphy artist Tang Shulin. The third picture is an invocation by Ma Jinhua. The invocation was done in a single stroke and translates “In the name of God, most gracious, most merciful.” I love how minimal and ornate it can look simultaneously.
